About
Based between Sudbury, ON and Montréal, QC, Joëlle Villeneuve’s practice is focused on our symbiotic environmental relationships; within linguistic, cultural, and visual landscapes.
Growing up in a small francophone community in Northern Ontario, questions of embodied culture and collective memory have been a constant in her life. Inspired by her personal struggles with connecting to and discerning her emotional body, photography is used as a tool in her practice to study the traces left by the contexts in which we find ourselves.
Focusing on the material image, Villeneuve questions how who we are and what we see is based on the histories that inform our surroundings.
